In this Diploma of Higher Education in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, you’ll investigate a variety of questions and themes in religious studies and philosophy from historical and contemporary perspectives. The AA-T in Philosophy prepares students to transfer to a California State University as a philosophy major. It does this in two ways. First, it introduces students to the main questions within the major branches of philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, political theory, aesthetics, ethics, and logic. Second, it develops the critical thinking skills necessary for tackling those philosophical questions.

Philosophy investigates fundamental questions about knowledge, value, and existence. This program enables students to expand their ability to read critically, analyze arguments, and express complex ideas in oral and written work.

This course introduces students to theories of knowledge, with an emphasis on the developing field of social epistemology. Throughout the course we will assess the strengths and weaknesses of different arguments and theoretical frameworks.

Philosophers systematically explore fundamental issues, ideas, and truths to understand better our place in the world and why we do what we do. Among many questions, philosophers consider what it means to live a good life, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and the relationship between the individual and society. Philosophy students develop logic, general problem-solving, communication, and persuasion skills applicable to many careers, including business, STEM, law, teaching, health, and the arts.

Introduces the nature of philosophical activity through careful study of major philosophical topics. Topics may include the nature of reality, knowledge, God's existence, and the significance of human life.

The study of humanities is concerned with human experiences and the manner through which they have been expressed. Courses in the Humanities Program examine the historical, social, philosophical, religious, and artistic expressions of different cultures and their diverse perspectives on the sacred as well as secular worlds. The Humanities-Philosophy course offerings at Laney College provide students with an opportunity to delve into the grand, fantastic, and beautiful world of ideas. In addition to providing a transformative approach to the humanistic traditions, the department will also give students the opportunity to develop their critical thinking as well as their writing skills.

The Winter School "Prognostication in the Middle Ages: Philosophical Strategies to Deal with Uncertainties", organized by Prof. Stefano Perfetti (University of Pisa), is part of a co-research initiative within a PRIN PNRR (Research Project of National Interest, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research). The project focuses on "Social, Political, and Religious Prognostication and its Roots: Philosophical Strategies for Coping with Uncertainties and Planning the Future", prot. P2022BMJ5A.

The Associate in Arts for Transfer degree in Philosophy provides students with the foundational knowledge necessary to make a successful transition into a Baccalaureate Degree at any of the CSU campuses. The Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) is a special degree offered at California Community Colleges. Students who earn an AA-T or AS-T degree are guaranteed admission to a campus within the California State University (CSU) system in a similar major, although not necessarily to a specific campus. Students who complete an AA-T or AS-T are given priority consideration when applying to a particular program that is similar to the student’s community college major and will be given a special GPA advantage when applying to CSU-impacted campuses or majors. Students who are planning to pursue an AA-T or AS-T are strongly advised to meet with a counselor for additional information about this transfer program.

In Postgraduate Diploma Business (PGDipBus) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics we prepare students to solve the world’s problems by combining the analytical reasoning of philosophy, the social insight of political studies, and the methodological rigour of economics. Students complete a challenging course of study in logic, ethics, collective action, human behaviour, political theory, economics, and the history of ideas.

While the world has been moving increasingly towards greater inter-connectivity through trade, infrastructure, communications, and migration, criticism of ‘globalisation’ has been growing ever louder. This wide-ranging course explores the process of globalisation, its macroeconomic implications, and the role of international organisations such as the United Nations. You will examine some of the responses to globalisation, from populist political movements like Brexit and Trumpism to diverse transnational social movements such as Black Lives Matter and the Arab Spring of 2011. In so doing, the programme will engage with ethical and theoretical constructs to help us to understand better the thinking behind the differing dynamics we are examining. This course is perfect for students seeking to understand some of the most significant political phenomena of our time.

Throughout the course we will encourage the participants to think about how logic can be applied to their fields of interest.
