The goal is to improve vocabulary, comprehension of written English, and standardized test scores through learning the Greek and Latin components of English. The focus is on patterns and processes in the formation of the lexicon. The terminology used in medicine, business, education, law, and humanities; introduction to principles of language history and etymology. Greek or Latin is not required.

At the center of Wabash College’s curriculum since its founding, the Classics delve into the history, art, archaeology, mythology, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. The Wabash Classics department continues to give instruction in Greek and Latin from beginning to advanced levels as the most immediate means of exploring the ancient world, of understanding the structure and vocabulary of our English language, and of preparing for the technical vocabulary used in the medical and legal professions today. These offerings are supplemented by other classical studies that focus on aspects of ancient civilization, e.g., ancient medicine, Greek and Roman religion, Roman urban planning, ancient political theory, Greek philosophy, and ancient rhetoric.

Welcome to the Chicanx and Latinx Studies minor! As an interdisciplinary program focused on social justice, culture, and history, the minor is designed to offer undergraduate students a dynamic understanding of the historical, social, and cultural complexities of Chicanx and Latinx communities in the United States. The minor also introduces students to the major conversations within this multi-faceted field, opening up the diversity of Chicanx and Latinx cultures and experiences to further exploration. Students enrolled in the minor are encouraged to engage with the social forces shaping the broad array of Chicanx and Latinx experiences in the United States and beyond.

This fall we will be offering the following ancient language courses at our Jerusalem Campus, and/or Online as indicated under course descriptions: Latin (Levels I, II, & III), Ancient Greek (All Levels), Biblical Hebrew (Levels I, II, & IV), Classical Syriac (Level I), and Coptic (Level I). All courses are taught using the Polis Method, which is based on total language immersion from the very first class.

The Classics Department prepares you for graduate-level study through rigorous coursework and research opportunities. Our faculty members provide individual guidance to students pursuing graduate study and engage in a candid conversation about job prospects within academia.

The Diploma of Classical Languages complements the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts. Students who enrol in the course will learn the languages in which the Western Tradition was originally articulated and expressed and thus access the texts in their original language, free from the interpretations of translation.
