Introduction
German Tanztheater, most famously used by choreographer Pina Bausch, is known for its beauty and expression. In this course, you will learn the basic techniques of Jooss, Leder, and Laban, as well as a range of helpful elements to create meaningful dance sequences yourself.
This course is a mixture of technical exercises and sequences given by the tutor and room for improvisation and self-expression. You will also develop your dance compositional skills by using German Tanztheater's tools, as this course is regularly performing in Morley College's Dance events. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, i.e., progression to an advanced-level course.
By the end of this course, you will be able to: perform basic technical elements of German Tanztheater (contractions, leading from the wrist, lifting the chest, drop and recovery of weight); create material and build choreography by finding purposeful and expressive movements through improvisation; tell a story and display an emotional state with the body
work effectively as part of a team; have improved your movement vocabulary and dance composition skills; present work as part of a performance.
Mode of delivery: online plus. Your tutor will be mentoring, guiding, and helping you throughout this practical course, including using voice and speech, creating material from an emotional approach, using storytelling elements and gestures. To ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. In addition to your dance practice, a study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites, and connections with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning. Dance study offers a range of benefits, including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also enhance employment skills using encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity, and concentration.
