Introduction
The study program of the Diploma and University Master in Advanced European Studies (DAES) is aimed at providing students with specialized skills in the structure and the functioning of the European Union and its policies.
The course is based on a multidisciplinary approach, ranging from political science and international relations to law and economics, and it leverages the contributions of officials and experts from European Institutions.
It is aimed at preparing students for careers in the EU, national and local institutions, professional associations, the corporate world, and private practice.
Faculty
The academic staff includes top officials from European Institutions, university professors as well as experts in European issues.
Training is therefore both theoretical and practical, especially as a result of the hands-on experience of officials from European Institutions.
Study Visits
During the academic year, study visits are carried out to institutions, companies, and organizations in line with the study program.
Depending on feasibility conditions, students also go on a study trip to the European institutions in Brussels.
Working Languages
During the first semester of DAES 2023/2024, all courses will be held in English. Instead, the second semester will also include courses that will be taught in Italian or French: English will however continue to prevail as a working language.
Specific Language Courses in the three working languages have been offered since the beginning of the academic year, to support the language learning/improvement process.
Each language course includes technical workshops to integrate language skills with subject-related terminology, specifically about legal, economic, social, and political topics.
Admissions
Curriculum
The program covers one academic year and is divided into two phases.
PHASE 1: Diploma in Advanced European Studies
The first phase includes two semesters of full-time education (October to January, and February to June/July) and it envisages frontal lectures, lectiones magistrales, conferences, simulation games, practice and research activities (both at individual level and in groups), as well as debates and presentations of papers that are the subject of Project Work.
Attendance to courses and all academic activities is compulsory. Course activities are envisaged to take place principally on-site, with some online training activities and/or lectures. The College has the infrastructure to hold online courses, should legislative restrictions be put in place.
Exams relating to the first and second semesters are held in January and June respectively. Overall, each student must take 11 exams over the two semesters.
Students who successfully pass such exams obtain a first qualification: the Diploma in Advanced European Studies (DAES).
PHASE 2: University Master
After having successfully passed all the exams, and thus having achieved the DAES Diploma, students can achieve the University Master qualification, by writing and defending their theses with a partner university. The Thesis will be focussing on a European issue that is connected to one course or seminar within the DAES program, under the supervision of one of the professors of the College. Currently, students have achieved the master's qualification thanks to the cooperation with the University of Parma, which is one of the Founding Members of the European College of Parma.
The European Studies program is multidisciplinary and includes 6 main areas, each of which comprises several courses and workshops:
- EU History, Politics and Institutions;
- EU Legal System and Law;
- EU External Action;
- Strategic Sectors, Funds, and Research in the EU;
- EU Economics and Governance;
- Food Safety, Health and Environmental Protection.
