Introduction
The Intensive English Programme (IEP) is a course specifically designed to cater to students’ proficiency needs in the English Language. The programme equips students with the necessary skills to enable them to write and communicate well in English when they embark on their tertiary education at First City University College.
The comprehensive content and carefully-designed programme structure emphasize general and academic English skills through modules such as Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. In addition to the four basic modules, students also have the privilege of studying additional modules such as Grammar and Conversational English which will further strengthen their foundation in the language.
The higher levels (Level 3 and Level 4) of the programme will prepare students to sit for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam which meets the language entry requirement for many higher education institutions worldwide. Students will be exposed to the effective test-taking strategies and time management skills needed to be able to perform well in the test within a short duration of 3 to 6 months.
At every level of the programme, students will sit for a progress test in Week 5 and a final test in Week 11 of the programme. IELTS Preparatory Workshops can also be arranged upon request at any point in the programme to further reinforce the skills and strategies needed for the students to perform well in the IELTS exam.
All applicants for the Intensive English Programme are required to sit for an English Placement Test at the point of entry in order to determine their appropriate placement level so that they can achieve the required IELTS band score as early as possible. For example, students who are placed in the Higher Basic Level after the English Placement Test may need only 6 months to achieve the IELTS band score of 5.0.
