Introduction
The English Department offers classes addressing English skills at the basic, developmental, and transfer levels. We are committed to presenting engaging material that addresses the varied interests and needs of our students. We are focused on helping students achieve their transfer requirements, and offering the necessary critical thinking and composition, and reading courses required by 4-year transfer institutions.
What you will learn
Studying English will give you skills in expression and critical thinking that can be applied in many aspects of your personal and professional life. Through reading and writing, you will develop an understanding and appreciation for worldwide cultures and diverse perspectives, learn how to evaluate information, and develop important foundational skills for life-long learning.

The College of Alameda (COA) Promise is a pathway for Alameda high school graduates to access a quality college education. Eligible students will receive a year of college without fees.

Each semester, the Peralta Colleges Foundation is committed to providing students with access to post-secondary education and persistence services so they can complete college prepared for a successful career. The Peralta Promise enables qualifying students to attend their first semester at one of the Peralta Colleges – Laney College, Merritt College, College of Alameda, or Berkeley City College – for free!

Program Outcome
Upon completion of this program a student will be able to:
- Engage in active, purposeful, critical reading: Theoretical and practical knowledge of the purpose of rhetorical writing and literature; examination of the importance of rhetorical writing and literature in American main- and sub-cultures of the past and present.
- Assess, in writing, the tools and materials given to succeed at the workplace or in the community and be able to suggest changes to increase effectiveness: Assess, evaluate, and interpret ideas found in writing and literature; communicate effectively, reach conclusions, and solve problems concerning the craft and criticism of rhetorical writing and literature.
- Evaluate information critically to develop claims and support them: Engage in the meaningful discourse regarding personal identity, goals, and knowledge of the capacity of writing and literature as a means of social influence.
- Develop an understanding and appreciation for worldwide cultures and diverse perspectives through active and purposeful reading and writing: Examine the scope of writing and literature with an appreciation of human values; understand the significance of writing and literature as a social action relative to global issues

What can I do with a degree in English (ENGL)
Individuals completing an AA in English become office administrators, tutors, secretaries, associate copywriters, and customer account representatives. Professions for English majors completing a BA include administration, management, professional writing, teaching, editing, advertising, publicity, marketing, and publishing. English is frequently studied as a pre-law major.
