This course has been designed to develop your knowledge of current trends in photography, learn to interpret photo-imaging assignment briefs, consult with clients to refine objectives of photography assignments, select appropriate technologies and workflows to capture images, employ aesthetic, conceptual, compositional and technical skills to photo-imaging outcomes and allow you to gain exposure to a variety of shooting styles.

Ideal for beginner to intermediate level photographers, this course begins with the basics and covers how to use your camera in a professional context. Understanding your camera and equipment is vital, as this shows you how to get the best out of them. You’ll master using studio and natural lighting, cover depth of field, shutter speed, capturing motion, light temperature, lenses, digital image resolution, ISO and shutter speed, and how to focus the lens (auto, continuous, single etc.).

The Basic Photography curriculum is designed for the amateur or media professional interested in adding fundamental photography skills.

At Bennington, students work closely with faculty to design the content, structure, and sequence of their study and practice—their Plan—taking advantage of resources inside and outside the classroom to pursue their work.

Exploring both traditional and digital photography, you will produce work which will show your development and understanding of photography, learn how to use SLR/digital cameras, how the studio works, develop black and white film, darkroom skills and various Photoshop techniques.
