For students without previous knowledge of wine, this introductory survey explores the world of wine through discussions, tastings, food and wine pairing, assigned readings, and student presentations.

Introduction to electric circuit analysis and design; voltage, current, and power; circuit laws and theorems; element I-V curves, linear and nonlinear circuit concepts; operational amplifier circuits; transient response of capacitor and inductor circuits, sinusoidal steady-state response, frequency response, transfer functions.

Undergraduate Prerequisites: Academic background that includes the material covered in a standard course on college algebra.

Life in the seas: its ecology, evolution, and human impacts. Includes behavioral, physiological, structural, ecological, and evolutionary perspectives. A prerequisite for the Marine Semester. Students must register for two sections: lecture and discussion.

Students and instructors alike will benefit from this rigorous, unfussy text, which keeps a clear focus on the basic probabilistic concepts required for an understanding of financial market models, including independence and conditioning. Assuming only some calculus and linear algebra, the text develops key results of measure and integration, which are applied to probability spaces and random variables, culminating in central limit theory.

The focus of our courses is on the broad understanding of the statistical methods and computational and presentation skills for statistical problem-solving. We also develop students’ ability to systematically think about how to describe the world around us and use data to make decisions and predictions. Statistical research methodology and associated analysis techniques aimed at a non-mathematical audience (non-calculus based). This course introduces procedures that are most commonly used in the investigation of survey and experimental data.

As a statistical science major, you’ll take an interdisciplinary academic approach to the study of empirical quantitative reasoning in its scientific and social context, through three themes: mathematical, computational and applied statistics. You’ll learn how statistical inference and probabilistic modeling are central to all of the pure and applied sciences today, as well as how pervasive statistical thinking and quantitative reasoning have become in culture, economy, law, government and science, dramatically changing the way people view the world.

Upon graduation, students receive an Actuarial Science degree as well as a Statistics degree. Most students also choose a Business Management minor. Becoming an actuary requires passing a series of professional exams set by the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. Students will be prepared for the first five exams and take the exams while still in college. Most students are recruited to careers as actuaries immediately after college working in banking, insurance, government agencies and financial services.

From probability and statistics to data analysis and machine learning, master the skills needed to solve complex challenges with data.

The main goal of this learning module is to discuss phase transitions and critical phenomena in statistical physics. We introduce the ideas of mean-field theory and renormalization group and exploit them to calculate the critical exponents for the Ising model. More advanced topics concern the models with continuous symmetry, topological phase transitions, as well as Monte Carlo simulations.
