The Associate of Arts degree is a two-year undergraduate program offered by many institutions in the province of British Columbia and beyond. The Associate Degree program is designed to provide broad-based knowledge and experiences which lay a foundation for further undergraduate study or entry to the workforce. Students of the Associate of Arts (International Business) Degree program will gain multi-disciplinary knowledge in the faculties of arts, humanities, and social science, and develop their critical thinking and research skills.

A major focus of the courses is on the development of skills in research, writing, critical reading, and critical thinking. Both Instructors and students use a wide variety of active learning methods including film, class discussions and projects, guest speakers and multi-media presentations. Studying history significantly supports students in developing important skills sets including communication (oral and written), research, critical thinking and analytic skills that are essential job requirements for future employment in the fields of business, industry, education, government and public service and others.

Spanish is a global language spoken by over 400 million people around the world. It is the official language in 21 countries of which 19 are located in South America. Spanish feeds a diverse group of Spanish-speaking countries with their own vibrant and rich cultures. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of the Spanish language by learning and practicing basic oral, listening, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on developing conversation and comprehension skills, as well as providing a general understanding of Spanish grammar. The course will also promote cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking countries.

The focus of our courses is on the broad understanding of the statistical methods and computational and presentation skills for statistical problem-solving. We also develop students’ ability to systematically think about how to describe the world around us and use data to make decisions and predictions. Statistical research methodology and associated analysis techniques aimed at a non-mathematical audience (non-calculus based). This course introduces procedures that are most commonly used in the investigation of survey and experimental data.

This course introduces the sociological perspective, which interprets social behaviour and group relations through study of the intersection between social phenomena and personal life. The course examines the basic themes, concepts, and theories that frame the sociological approach to understanding the world, asking how social circumstances influence the way we know ourselves, how sociologists gather data and evidence to portray an accurate picture of social reality, and how sociological thinking helps to remedy social problems. The course provides a broad foundation for further study and research in this area.

This course examines social work from historical, philosophical, and theoretical perspectives. The knowledge, skills, and values of social workers are discussed in the context of relevant codes of ethics and practice standards. Students will explore the diverse roles of social workers in relation to the basic structures and functions of social service agencies. The development of self-awareness is a key component of this course. This course alone does not qualify a student to work in the field. In preparation for further study, students will be invited to consider how their own values, attitudes, and beliefs align with discipline.

The Associate of Arts Degree (Psychology) is 2-year, 60 credit, multidisciplinary program that includes arts courses with a focus on psychology (minimum 18 credits). Students can expect to use up to date technology and interactive online and in-class learning tools that engage students and promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Graduating students may move to entry-level positions in health and social services, human resources, and sales, to name a few, or may also choose to work towards advanced degrees.

Political science is a central element in the social sciences and focuses on the use of rationality and knowledge applied to public policy, government structure, international relations, and combines these sorts of foci with a deep exploration of the foundational ideas that underpin politics, the state, morality, ethics, freedom, security, and, ultimately, the “good” life.

Our courses focus on the development in understanding, problem-solving, collecting experimental data, and relating physics to local and global issues. Introductory physics, including Newtonian mechanics, gravitation, electricity, and optics. This course is designed for non-science students. Not open to students with credit for Physics 12 or equivalent. Instructors and students use a wide variety of active learning methods including class discussions, problem solving, presentations, and experiments using physical objects and computers.

Philosophy at AC focuses on helping you learn how to think and communicate in a serious in disciplined way about things that matter, regardless of your ultimate career and life path. Students learn through multi-media, practical exercises and lectures, developing their critical thinking skills through in-class debates, small discussions and philosophical essays.

The focus of our courses is on the development of students’ mathematical thinking and behavior which consists of thinking in logical manner, constructing models to describe phenomena, and problem-solving. We use various active learning methods such as interactive lectures, individual and group activities, project-based learning, problem-solving, and audio-visual presentations.

International Studies is an established interdisciplinary field within the social sciences, but is relatively new owing to its connection with the emergence of a truly global society in the 20th century. Mainstream courses in international studies draw upon resources from political science, economics, history, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, feminist theory and philosophy, global/critical race theory, media and technology studies, arts and music, and even the natural sciences as needed to inform our empirical understanding of “the international” terrain.

This course critically examines issues facing women in Canadian society, such as gender inequality and discrimination, gender-based violence, reproductive health and reproductive rights, the construction of motherhood and work, and other aspects of female status in patriarchy. Students will explore the work of prominent feminist scholars, the role of feminist movements in social change, and recent social research on gender, sexuality, and intersectional theories of oppression. In this introductory course, we will also discuss gender-non-conforming identities, masculinity, and men’s issues.

Students within the Associate of Arts (Mathematics) Degree program will gain knowledge in solving equations, calculus, and programming, and will develop their quantitative and analytical skills. Students will also complete courses in Humanities and Social Sciences to further explore their interests.

The major focus of studying Health Sciences involves the application of science to health-related topics such as medicine, nutrition, and environmental health. It involves applying scientific research to clinical practice to provide a background for students leading to improving healthcare for communities. This course will provide a foundational overview of the concepts of health, illness, and disease across cultures and historical periods, including Indigenous cultures. Current epidemiological terminology and strategies will be introduced. Students will examine the social determinants of health and how public policy is used to promote population health. Students will also have an opportunity to explore specific health issues, including ethical and moral considerations, and be provided with an overview of the Canadian health care system.
