This certificate in Corrections provides students with the knowledge and exposure to the legal considerations and best practices of correctional administration while also preparing students for the fundamental professional principles within the field of corrections. Students pursuing this certificate will be introduced and exposed to the history of correctional systems in the United States along with the current system and the needs of the future within community corrections. Students will learn and demonstrate proficiency in the legal aspects of the correctional system and obtain the working knowledge required of professionals looking for entry-level positions within the corrections field.

The Corrections degree and certificate program provides preparatory instruction necessary for persons who wish entry into four-year institutions for careers as Correctional Officers, Counselors, or Probation and Parole Officers with federal, state, and county agencies. Entry-level employment may be available after satisfactory completion of the AA degree or certificate requirements.

The Summer Course in International Criminal Justice course aims to familiarize students with the intricate nature of international crimes, their perpetrators, and the responses of the international community. International crimes and gross human rights violations pose a threat to international peace and security and call for effective action. An effective response, however, is often hampered by a lack of knowledge of the true nature and etiology of international crimes.

STUDENTS GRADUATING WITH DEGREES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE WILL: 1. Know the judicial system of the nation. 2. Know those conditions and circumstances that can prevent criminal behaviour. 3. Understand the factors leading to rehabilitating offenders. 4. Be prepared for employment opportunities in various criminal justice fields, including law enforcement, law probation, juvenile services, private security, public administration/planning, counselling, research, regulatory agencies, and law.

The Criminal Justice Program provides students with a firm understanding of the nature of crime and deviance, its impact upon society, and society’s reaction to criminal and deviant behaviour.

Criminology is the social-scientific study of crime, including the measurement, aetiology, consequences, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency.

A balance of general, liberal arts and technical courses is offered to those students who intend to enter the field of criminal justice for the first time and those currently employed in the field.

While SDCC does not currently have an Administration of Justice program, we offer a couple of classes that you can use as associate degree electives. These courses will introduce you to the Criminal Justice System's functions, including administrative aspects of law enforcement, the court system, and the corrections system.

The Criminal Justice Program's mission is to prepare students for employment or promotional opportunities in the criminal justice field and/or for the pursuit of advanced degrees in criminal justice by educating students to think critically, solve problems, and apply the fundamental concepts of criminal justice.

The Criminal Justice Technology Degree program emphasizes a combination of criminal justice theory and practical application necessary for successful employment and continued educational advancement to a four-year institution.
