The aim of this distance learning program is to offer flexible access to certification through distance learning for people who lack qualifications in technical communication; the program emphasises that the job of a technical writer entails more than writing: graphics, cultural issues, layout, and design all play a part, and students receive tuition on all of these areas.

The Writing Studies minor is a home for students who believe that writing can be an integral part of their personal, professional, and academic success. Writing Studies is a research-based, interdisciplinary field that includes the study of digital media, professional and technical writing, academic, civic, and cultural rhetorics, and the theory and practice of writing pedagogy. 

Through its courses and tutorials, the Writing Program helps undergraduates acquire writing and communication skills and more general habits of mind essential both to their full participation in the intellectual life of the University and to their future personal, professional, and civic lives.

Learn the Technical Writing Essentials, technical reports, and professional communication with this online course. This free online technical writing course will teach you the basics of technical writing and communication. You will study the main conventions and characteristics of technical writing, the complexity and iterative nature of a writing process, and the importance of knowing your audience and writing specifically to meet their needs.

The Certificate in Creative Writing requires a total of 18 units. Students must take both core courses (6 units), then 4 courses from their selected track–Creative Writing Emphasis or Professional Writing Emphasis (12 units), with the possibility of substituting two of those courses from the elective list (see below). Each emphasis has a list of recommended electives. During the semester that a student receives the Creative Writing Certificate, she or he should present a public reading of no less than twenty minutes as arranged with an English Department faculty member who regularly teaches creative writing courses.

This course is a hands-on introduction to generative artificial intelligence. You will learn to use AI tools (not just ChatGPT!) to generate and manipulate text and images and analyse textual data. These skills will be put to use right away in the form of a small guided course project, completed in teams of 1-3 participants. The project choice is entirely up to the participants; template project ideas will also be provided.

With a focus on both professional and creative writing, the two-year Professional Writing Ontario College Diploma program teaches you the skills and flexibility to work as a writer in a variety of fields. You learn writing skills for digital and print media from nationally recognized writers, authors, and communications experts.
