The Independent Artist Program at Musicians Institute (MI) offers a unique educational experience for singers, songwriters, DJs, producers, rappers, and instrumentalists seeking to control their artistic destiny in today's global music market. This curriculum offers an opportunity to develop skills in specific performance or technical areas, creating a broad based historical and theoretical background as applied to the commercial music field. The Santa Barbara City College Music Department offers a comprehensive program aimed at reaching each student of music, both major and non-major alike. It provides the music major with a thorough basis in the creative (theory, composition, interpretation) and recreative (performance, applied music, history and appreciation) realms of musical endeavor and enjoyment. For those interested in the commercial music field, the department offers courses in jazz, sound recording and electronic music, song writing and arranging. Non-majors seeking a better understanding of music can participate in performance groups and classes in theory, history and instrumental instruction, among others.

The Music Industry Certificate Program (MICP) curricula are primarily designed to provide the basic toolset required for local, regional, or national entry-level employment in various music-industry-related settings. Secondarily, the program is also designed to position the student to transition into a higher-degree music program at a 2-year or 4-year institution, either locally, regionally, or nationally.

This certificate signifies that students have mastered the basic skills of sound reinforcement and recording for live and recorded events. Successful completion will provide a solid basis for future study in sound design and live event reinforcement.

The Herb Alpert Music Center at Los Angeles City College offers a streamlined curriculum to create a transfer-ready, work-ready, and enriched student community through the Associate in Arts (AA-T) transfer degree that guarantees transfer to four-year CSU institutions, the Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Music, skill-building certificates, and general music education. Our dedicated and experienced faculty teach distinct and creative courses in theory, musicianship, appreciation, history, technology, performance, and techniques for students at all levels.
