The Department of British and American Studies is comprised of three courses: the British and American Studies Course, where students learn about the cultures, literature, societies, and other features of the English cultural area; the English Communication Course focused on improving communication skills; and the English Education Course, which cultivates comprehensive human abilities to develop specialists in English-language education. This department’s educational philosophy is a thorough dedication to world-class English-language education, liberal arts education, communication education, and human education. According to their interests, students can choose from these courses that share the department’s common goal of further improving the four language competencies (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) at an advanced level.

In the Faculty of Letters, we pursue Japanese culture through the eyes of philosophy, history, and literature. We deeply study various Asian cultures which were a source of and continue to have a profound influence on, Japanese culture. Further, we seek to deepen our understanding of world currents. Our curriculum includes a variety of lectures and courses that provide practical knowledge and certification.

Now that the business market is expanding across national borders, society is demanding human resources with the skills and sense to play an active role in the world. In 2009, the Faculty of Economics started the GoLD Program (Global Leadership Development Program), which is a study abroad program unique to the faculty. As with general study abroad, the purpose is of course to improve language skills, but the specific features are as follows.

You will learn from the basics to practice the two elements of "wrapping" people, "clothing" and "living", "communication/information" that connects with people, "community/business" and "home economics education" that are the stage for playing an active part in society. You are free to choose what to combine and learn. In this class, you are going to acquire the reading and writing competence required to study in Japan in two years. In the first year, you are going to do reading exercises through short stories and sentences so that your way of speaking Japanese sounds natural. In 2021, the Global Retailing Program (GR Program) is added to the Professional Research Course Master’s Degree curriculum at the Graduate School of Business and Commerce. After students have obtained the required credits, a GR Program Certificate of Completion will be offered, in addition to the Master’s Degree. Globalization in retailing and platform business operations has been advancing. Global dynamism, which involves the movement of people, goods, money, services, and information, etc., is becoming increasingly more complex. Our GR Program tackles the challenges facing retailing and provides the perspectives, knowledge, and experiences to understand global retailing. In this way, the GR Program aims to create business leaders to work actively at the forefront of distribution and retailing in Asia.

International students from our partner universities are eligible for the Japanese Language Program (the intensive Japanese program). The program is divided into four levels: Beginner I, BeginnerⅡ, IntermediateⅠ, and IntermediateⅡ. Advanced-level Japanese class is available in the Credit Auditor Course [Economics Course] (Please note that applicants need to have N2 or above if they wish to apply for the Credit Auditor Course [Economics Course]).
