Environmental Science combines information from biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, stressing a scientific approach toward understanding the nature and scope of current environmental issues.

Environmental science is the study of the interaction of humans and the physical and biological systems of the earth, and the dependence on natural resources by humans. It involves the study of the interaction and co-evolution of human, physical, and biological systems. At TCC, you can earn an Associate in Science with a Specialization in Environmental Science. Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution.

You’ll learn about matter and energy down to the molecular level. Courses build a solid foundation in general chemistry and develop your understanding of the scientific method of experimentation, observation, and analysis of results. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in the lab.

Emphasis in Ecological Restoration and Management The Environmental Horticulture Program teaches the basic skills and provides state-of-the-art information required to develop a strong foundation for a variety of career specialties within the landscaping, ornamental horticulture and the regenerative and restoration industry. The program encourages professional standards, a strong work ethic and environmentally sound management practices.

The Environmental Science Technology, A.S. program focuses on environmental compliance and protection of our land and water at the federal, state, and local levels. Under the direction of an environmental scientist, graduates will be expected to perform physical, chemical, and biological sampling in the field.

The Environmental Technology program offers an array of classes dealing with how science relates to the natural world. The primary importance of a basic understanding of science is stressed while focusing on the recognition of current topics in science and how they affect our everyday lives...

As an Environmental Science student, you will experience a broad and dynamic field that unites a number of disciplines so you can understand the biologic, hydrologic, geologic, and atmospheric components of the Earth and the role of human beings on the Earth. In addition, an information explosion has occurred in Environmental Science that will provide you with opportunities in many facets of the field. With a curriculum that parallels the first two years of most four-year programs, NCC can provide you will the foundational knowledge and skills in this expanding area of science in preparation for transfer to a four-year college or university program.

The Associate in Science in Agriculture Plant Science for Transfer Degree provides for applying the various principles of the biological and physical sciences in agriculture. The course offerings are fundamental and broad in scope to transfer and prepare to seek employment.

The Forest Restoration and Fire option prepare students with skills needed to engage in forest disturbance management and processes, including wildfire, landslides, insects, and disease. Graduates will have the knowledge and the skillset to incorporate natural processes, including disturbance, into active forest management planning.

Careers such as Natural Resource Managers, Water Resource Specialists, and Environmental Compliance Officers are possibilities with this pathway. This is an Associates of Science Degree that is intended for transfer. Graduates who do not plan to transfer may pursue employment.

The Associate of Science in Agriculture is a transfer degree for the student who plans to major in an agricultural related field. Northark has agreements with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and with Arkansas Tech University to offer students seamless options for transfer into specified agriculture majors or concentrations using the AS in Agriculture degree, but the degree can also serve as a foundation for students who plan to transfer elsewhere.

Very few things are more fundamental to the human condition and civilization itself than the natural resource base our economy is predicated upon. The state, nation and the world needs qualified persons in order to locate, utilize, and manage these resources, as well as protect human interests via environmental monitoring and remediation. Studies involving our planet and its resources are a large mandate. Thus the Department of Geosciences and Agriculture offers several concentrations under the NRES major. Agriculture – A Purdue transfer program where students may focus on the beginnings of plant or animal agriculture studies along with fundamental core courses. The success of our Purdue transfer students is over 95% Forestry and Conservation – Timber resource overuse was the origin of our nation’s conservation movement in the late 1800s. Now trained professionals to manage these and other resources for the benefit of our own, and future, generation(s). Geology – The modern science of geology was created for the purpose of finding coal to fuel the Industrial Revolution. The search for Earth’s energy resources is still an important endeavor – such as both coal and oil in Indiana. Geologists also assist in the discovery and management of mineral and water resources, as well as remediation procedures associated with resource extraction and use. Geography – A field where the “lay of the land” is studied via geospatial sciences, and weather, climate, culture, and sociopolitical boundaries are explored.

This program provides students with entry-level skills for a career in hydrology. Hydrologic Technicians work closely with Professional Hydrologists and or Professional Engineers. The value of the Hydrologic Technicians degree to the hydrology profession is demonstrated every day as they collect data in all weather conditions and environments, ensures the proper collection of more uniform and reliable data.

Have you considered spending your career outdoors or in a work environment that focuses on the natural environment around us? Your future career could include occupations such as a riparian/watershed specialist, recreation manager, forest/wildlife ecologist, or wildland law enforcement officer. The Associate of Science in Natural Resources prepares students to complete the preliminary education needed for these professions.

The Associate of Science degree in Marine Science provides students with a strong platform in basic physical and life sciences, focusing on marine science. They can confidently pursue higher education in the sciences or enter the job market.
