The Journalism Option in Liberal Arts leads to an Associate of Arts (AA) degree and is administered by the English Department. The program prepares you for journalism and other media careers through teaching the fundamentals of the newsgathering process, from developing story ideas, conducting secondary research and in-person interviews, to writing and editing and publishing stories.

An Associate degree in Business Administration enables graduates to apply critical thinking skills to real-world business problems, develop a global mindset, and think strategically in complex and diverse settings. This positions Business Administration students for admission and successful transfer to highly-competitive Bachelor programs and their future professions and workplaces.

The Hostos Community College Liberal Arts major recognizes the unique value of the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree in the 21st century. It prepares students to enter a variety of future career and educational paths by providing the foundational knowledge they will need to be leaders in their field. Students who major in the Liberal Arts grapple with essential and significant questions that have relevance for our contemporary society and that humans have explored for millennia. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be an educated person? How do different cultures create community and define justice and power? What can different academic disciplines teach us about our world and ourselves? A liberal arts education fosters inquiry and encourages curiosity. Just as importantly, it enables students to develop transferable skills that will make them more effective communicators and adaptable learners, enhancing their marketability in a rapidly changing economy. Majoring in the Liberal Arts gives students the opportunity to explore different cultures, modes of thinking, and ways of understanding the world, allowing them to become the kind of humanistic, broad-based thinkers and problem solvers increasingly in demand by employers in the 21st century.

The Associate in Arts graduate is prepared for admission with advanced standing to a baccalaureate program. The student who completes the A.A. program has completed the first two years of study usually required for the Bachelor of Arts degree. For this reason, students should select their elective courses with great care, in consultation with their advisers, and in line with their educational and professional goals. Advisers are available in all departments and should be consulted by students for assistance in the choice of programs and electives suited to their individual educational needs.

The Departments of Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice and Speech, Communications, and Theatre Arts offer an interdisciplinary major in Gender and Women’s Studies leading to an Associate in Arts degree. This major focuses on gender as the object of analysis and addresses the many issues, inequalities, social constructions, and realities that gender presents in our contemporary society and throughout history.
