This certificate is equivalent to one year of the BA degree in Languages and Cultures (South Asia Pathway). It is designed for students who want to study South Asia but cannot commit to a three-year degree programme.

Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the historical and current experiences of Asian Pacific Americans. It is an academic program and a major for the Associate Arts (AA) degree in the Ethnic Studies Department.

This course will provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the cultures of the main Asian countries, including elements from linguistics, literature, history of the region, socio-economic and political structures. Literature: The course may introduce students to notable works of literature from Asian countries, spanning various genres such as poetry, fiction, and drama. Through the study of literary texts, students can gain insight into cultural values, beliefs, and storytelling traditions.

A major focus of our Asian studies courses is to develop cultural awareness and deeper appreciation for the cultures one of the largest immigrant groups in the Greater Vancouver region. Instructors use a wide variety of active learning methods including film, class discussions and projects, multi-media presentations and exploring local Asian cultural/historical sites.

The Asian Studies Minor offers students the opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary program of study of an Asian region or a single country. The program emphasizes a social science approach to the study of Asian history, politics, society, and culture with options to include foreign language and study abroad components towards completion of the Minor. For the purposes of this minor, Asia is defined first and foremost as a geographic entity to include Western, Northern, Central, South and East Asian areas. Thus, for example, countries such as modern Turkey and areas such as the ‘Middle East’ can rightly be included in ‘Asia’ alongside areas more traditionally understood as part of Asia such as China and India.

A major in Asian Studies is rewarding for students of all backgrounds, as the global presence of Asia becomes ever more visible. This degree offers students career opportunities in law, business, government, journalism, arts, education, post-secondary education, and more. Students are encouraged to apply to the major shortly after successfully receiving a minimum grade of B in at least two Asia content courses. These may include one language course, but writing seminars do not fulfill the requirement. The major must be declared no later than the second semester of the junior year. Admission to the major after the start of the seventh semester will be by petition only.

The objective of this master's degree is to give students the necessary tools to understand and study the Asian world in its complexity and over the long term. This will involve acquiring in-depth knowledge concerning particular periods, regions or themes, as well as disciplinary skills in areas such as history, sociology, anthropology, geography, economics, but also paleography, art history, archeology or the study of religions. The teaching team, which brings together nearly 120 teacher-researchers working on Asia, develops demanding training linked to leading research units in the field of human and social sciences applied to the Asian region.

The Asian American Studies Certificate Program provides students with an opportunity to develop a sustained intellectual focus on Asian American racial formation, history, literature, culture, and social concerns. Interdisciplinary in nature, the certificate can be obtained by completing 12 credits of coursework.

Wabash College’s Asian Studies minor prepares students for roles of leadership and service in a global society increasingly influenced by Asia. Offering opportunities to learn Asian languages, close mentorship by experienced faculty, and a course plan incorporating study abroad, students pursuing any major are invited to join this program. The primary goal of the Asian Studies minor program is to provide students with a solid understanding of the developments within Asia and the historical and cultural exchanges between Asia and different parts of the world that have played an important role in shaping world history and the creation of the modern world.

Asian studies brings together an interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff, and students devoted to the study of China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. The major combines the study of an Asian language (Chinese or Japanese) and non-language courses in literature, history, philosophy, political science, sociology, and art history. Asian countries account for more than half the world’s population. This fact, combined with Asia’s strong economic growth trends, ensures that Asian people, culture, and business will become an increasingly important world influence during students’ lifetimes.

The program covers the development and life of Asian cultures from history, humanities, and the social sciences. It is interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, integrated, and seeks to combine knowledge and action.

The Ministry of Education offers the Regional Studies Programme (RSP) Scholarship to encourage academically able and linguistically talented students to pursue H2 History, covering South East Asia's developments under the Regional Studies Programme.

In keeping with its mission as a gateway bridging diverse international perspectives, HTIC offers the Discover East Asia: Language and Culture Immersion Program, which provides students the opportunity to pursue the study of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language and culture as they complete their A.A. degrees. A special highlight of the program is the opportunity to study abroad – in China at Shenzhen University, in Japan at Tokai University, or in South Korea at Hanyang University – in intensive language classes.
