Introduction
Change your future and secure the education you've been dreaming of. This Southampton Pre-Masters is an integrated programme designed to prepare and develop students from outside the UK who have an undergraduate degree but may not be considered adequately qualified for direct entry to their chosen Masters course.
(Please note: students with an undergraduate degree from the UK are not normally considered for this programme)
The programme provides a direct route for students onto a variety of master’s degree programmes including Archaeology, Art, Business, Economics, Engineering, English, Film, Health Sciences, History, Law, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Music, Philosophy and Social Sciences. It is available for 18 months (January start) or 2 years duration (September start) -some exceptions apply.
Successful completion of the Pre-Masters programme guarantees progression to a master’s programme from the list below:

Entry requirements
This programme is suitable for you if you:
- Have a bachelor degree from a recognised institution (minimum 2.2, or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University)
- Have not studied for an undergraduate degree in the UK
- Are not considered qualified for direct entry to your chosen Masters programme
- Do not have English as your first language
- Have a good intermediate level of English language proficiency
- Have the academic potential to succeed on your specified Masters programme once you have successfully completed part I of this programme.
English language proficiency
- 2 year programme: IELTS 5.5 (with minimum of 5.5 in each section) or equivalent qualification- exceptions apply
- 18-month programme: IELTS 6.0 (with minimum of 5.5 in each section) or equivalent qualification - exceptions apply
(Please note: Pre-sessional English language courses are not available for this programme
Typical course content
You will have tutorials to provide guidance on your personal learning and progression. All modules are delivered on campus and are assessed through coursework assignments, exams and the research project.
