This course will prepare you for employment or progression on to further study within engineering.
The HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering is offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The course aims to provide opportunities for electrical and electronic based engineers or technicians to achieve a Level 5, nationally recognised, vocationally specific qualification. The learning experience is a combination of practical training, theoretical knowledge and e-learning. You will use a variety of industry standard hardware and software including electronic circuit simulation; printed circuit board development; industrial automation using Programmable Logic Controllers; and fault finding diagnosis using digital test equipment.
The full-time course is two years, with 17.5 teaching hours expected per week. The part-time course is normally taken as a two year Higher National Certificate (HNC) followed by a further two years to achieve HND. The modules provide a blend of theoretical and practical skills essential for the professional engineer in a modern engineering environment. The course is made up of 5 mandatory level 4 modules, and 5 mandatory level 5 modules together with 3 level 4 and 3 level 5 optional units. Students completing this qualification will be equipped with knowledge, understanding and skills for success in employment in the electronic and electrical engineering based industry.
Students can study this programme as a part time 'top up' option following completion of an HNC. Registration for HND top ups commencing September 2017 must be completed by 9th June after discussion with Richard Morrison firstname.lastname@example.org

Please note if you are completing this course on a part-time basis as a top-up to your HNC, fees include a Registration fee plus a price per unit.
Candidates require at least one of the following:
- A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering.
- A GCE Advanced level profile which demonstrates strong performance in more than one GCE subject, equivalent to 64 UCAS tariff.
- Other related Level 3 qualifications.
- Maths and English at GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent).
- Other applicants will be considered based on relevant qualifications and experience.
- Provide evidence of ability to undertake the course through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). APEL is a process by which you may be awarded credits for learning that you have gained in the past, and which is relevant to the course to which you have applied. It may also help you gain entry to a programme if you do not have the required entry qualifications. This may be certificated or experimental learning. Where will it take me?
Successful completion of this course will be rewarded with a nationally recognisable Level 5 qualification.
This course can lead directly into a career as an engineer. In engineering, many employers regard this qualification as an industry standard entry requirement and can lead to a junior management position.
Alternatively, this course can provide entry to the second or third year of a university course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
How will it make me more employable?
This programme will equip you with specific skills in electronic and electrical engineering as well as generic skills in communication (researching articles, writing reports and presenting ideas).
You will learn how to look at electronic and control devices as systems made up of understandable sub-systems. As well as gaining a recognised qualification, you will take part in employability skills workshops such as teamwork, commitment, IT and problem solving and the Careers Education Programme.
How will I be assessed and given feedback?
Assessment strategies include continuous assessment through work-based learning and projects. Assessment strategies include continuous assessment through work-based learning and industry projects. All assessment is continuous and case studies, presentations and group work are used frequently. Time restricted assignments are used in some subjects to prepare for exams at university, however, these are optional.
Assessments are awarded grades of referral, Pass, Merit and Distinction.
